The lifestyle line mirrors these same values: speed, ambition, and sophistication.

BMW’s involvement in WorldSBK further deepens this connection. Competing firstly with the S 1000 RR and currently with M 1000 RR machines, the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team reflects the brand’s relentless pursuit of excellence. Achieving the 2024 World Superbike title with Toprak Razgatlıoğlu was a demonstration of the power and performance behind the BMW Motorrad brand.

M for Motorsport: experience the racing side of BMW Motorrad

BMW Motorrad’s entry in WorldSBK isn’t just symbolic — it’s highly competitive. Wearing BMW Motorrad Motorsport apparel is about embracing a culture. You’re not just a spectator; you’re part of the paddock, the legacy, the story.

WorldSBK has always celebrated production-based motorcycles — machines that share DNA with bikes you can ride on the road. That’s why the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Collection feels so at home here. It’s authentic. It’s rooted in the same engineering that propels the M 1000 RR at 300 km/h and ensures the daily ride feels just as exciting.

What makes BMW Motorrad unique? With iconic models like the R 1250 GS, the S 1000 RR, and the M 1000 RR — BMW Motorrad has merged track performance with road-ready versatility. A symbol of engineering excellence, with a long-standing commitment to innovation, quality, and riding pleasure since its foundation in 1923.

Taking off: the foundation of BMW

It’s widely known that BMW was founded as an aircraft engine manufacturer. In fact, BMW was born on March 7th 1916 as a merging of two companies in the middle of the First World War: Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. The foundation became possible because both were already working together in engine development and production and both were based close to Munich. The original name Bayerische Flugzeugwerke stayed at the beginning, but in 1917 it was switched to the current Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motors Factory).

And with the new name, a new logo was born that now is worldwide famous. The BMW logo hasn’t been changed since its creation, just with minor updates to adapt to a better overall design or trends. It featured the white and light blue from the Bavarian flag – which origin is from the Wittelsbach Royal Family, rulers of Bavaria from 1180 to 1918 – inside a black circle with the initials BMW; the black circle coming from the old logo of Rapp Motorenwerke.

An urban legend attributed the origin of the logo to being a symbolic representation of two white propellor blades working in the blue of the sky, as a reference to their production of engines for airplanes. Part of this false history was grounded because one of the first BMW advertising posters were illustrations of planes with rotating propellers mimicking the BMW logo.

From planes to motorcycles: the birth of BMW Motorrad

After the WWI, Germany had restrictions on the production of aircraft. Thus, BMW started to diversify its business. Right after the war, in 1919, BMW designed and manufactured their first engine for non-aviation application: the flat with M2B15 – since the very beginning the boxer two-cylinder engine has been a mainstay for the brand!

This engine was applied to motorbikes of another German manufacturer, Victoria, and to an in-home made model called Helios, made as side project not with the branding of BMW. The Helios motorcycle had the engine transversely mounted, creating problems of refrigeration to the rear cylinder. The Design Director, Max Friz, decided to redesign the motorbike: Friz oriented the engine perpendicular with the cylinders ‘hanging’ from the sides and adopted a shaft final drive as transmission. Thus, he created the stapple of the the twin boxer BMW design.

The engine, which was updated to a new model (M2B33) of 494cc was capable of producing 8,5 horsepower, propelling the bike to a very respectable 95 km/h (59mph) for the era. The code name was R32 and was marketed as BMW, starting production 1923.

BMW Motorrad was born!
