Founding HRC: the merging of forces of the golden wing brand

Honda Racing Corporation, or HRC, was established in 1982 to consolidate Honda's global racing activities under one expert roof.

The antecessor of HRC was Honda Racing Service Center (known of RSC) and the ‘NR block’ of the Honda R&D department. But to further understand how HRC became the number one force in motorcycle racing, we must go back in time.

Honda’s racing spirit dates back much further. From its very beginnings in the 1950s, Soichiro Honda was determined to prove his motorcycles on the toughest tracks in the world. This made him start to race first in Japan and rapidly expanding to international events. But Soichiro wanted to win the most prestigious and demanding race of the era, the Isle of Man TT, then part of the Motorcycle Grand Prix Championship (now known as MotoGP). His first entry was in 1959- and three years later he was already winning his first World titles and the coveted TT. The dream became a reality.

But by the force of circumstances and economic restrains, Honda was obliged to end it’s racing Grand Prix program – yes, even the big suffer sometime. But by 1973 Honda opened a division for purely motorcycling racing, and specifically for domestic competitions and commercial bikes in racing under the name Honda Racing Service Center Corporation. The RSC developed the antecessors of what now we can consider Superbike racing and soon became a big name, with full factory team in World Endurance racing with the RCB1000 machine and many other efforts.

In parallel, Honda returned to Grand Prix. Since 1979, the Honda R&D division created the NR office (standing for ‘New Racer’) to create a groundbreaking new GP prototype. The result was the famous NR500 with oval pistons. Results were not by the side of Honda, but the technical legacy and creativity achieved marked an era inside the company and in the minds of the fans.

By 1982, with founding date on September 1, Honda decided to merge the RSC company with the NR block of R&D to create a new company: Honda Racing Corporation. This allowed for a concentration of all motorcycling racing activities under one roof, with better coordination and synergies between all the racing programs and better service for customers and teams.

The creation of HRC established a benchmark for all the other manufacturers on how to manage a factory’s racing efforts and succeed in the tracks in all types of championships.

After 40 years of successful competition, HRC started a new era in April 1st 2022 with the expansion to automobile racing. Following what Honda did in motorcycling, all the automobile competition activities came under one roof, including F1, and under the branding of HRC. This new expansion came with a redesign of the HRC logo, with a darker shaded blue in the corporative colors and the HRC lettering with a more slanted look.

Honda in WorldSBK

Honda’s presence in WorldSBK dates back to the championship’s inception in 1988. From the very beginning, Honda has been a key player in shaping the series into one of the most exciting forms of motorcycle racing in the world.

One of the most iconic machines in Superbike history, the Honda RC30, won the very first WorldSBK championship in 1988 with American rider Fred Merkel. This marked the beginning of a long and storied relationship between Honda and the production-based championship.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Honda continued to compete at the top level, with bikes like the RC45 and the CBR1000RR Fireblade, piloted by legends such as John Kocinski, Colin Edwards, and Aaron Slight. The team consistently challenged for wins and titles, becoming a cornerstone of the Superbike paddock.

After a period of reduced involvement, Honda returned to WorldSBK with full factory support through Team HRC, reasserting its place in the series and investing heavily in rider talent and engineering. Today, with state-of-the-art CBR1000RR-R Fireblade machinery, and a renewed focus from the Honda Racing Corporation, the team is building momentum in the championship once again.
